A Brief Profile:Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, Chritrakoot, Satna, Madhya Pradesh, (INDIA) (established on 12th Feb.1991 through M.P. Act 9 of 1991) is the first model of a full-fledged rural university set up on the basis of Dr. Radhakrishnan Report. The model effected a synthesis of the people's college (folk Hoschole) experience of Denmark, the land-grant university concept development in the U.S.A., the Shantiniketan experiment of Tagore and "Nai Talim" model of Gandhiji.

The rural university is a rebellion against the traditional elitist top down pattern of education and indeed represents the movement for "people's education". Added with the responsibility of rural transformation, the educational function in the rural university has the following three components:

Creation of new courses to fill the cadres related to rural management function in the (employment oriented) technologies and development communication.

Up-gradation of knowledge and skills among the various cadres of rural development functionaries.

Creation of awareness and skill among people in the domains of (political) self-governance, economical self-reliance and social education leading to harmonious co-existence.

The University which is completing a decade of services and is entering into its adolescence has been in a position to home activity structures reflecting the objectives of the rural university concepts as envisaged by Dr. Radhakrishnan Committee Report.

A project style of operation has become established in the university. About 25 projects are operational in the university and many projects are in the pipeline.

A number of innovations have been possible on the Gramodaya campus in its new face of unfolding. The most significant among them is the well-formed foundation courses component called "values and social responsibility" (VSR) through which the students are given orientation to understand values of individual and society and enabled in their personality restructuring and attitudinal changes through proper skill development and community service experience.
